Multiple Sclerosis: What It Is And How CBD Might Provide Relief

Multiple Sclerosis And CBD

Multiple sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system – an autoimmune disorder that destroys myelin, the protective sheath around nerve fibers. When this happens, it can cause symptoms like numbness and tingling in extremities, muscle weakness, problems with coordination and balance, pain, and bladder dysfunction. Unfortunately, there are no known cures for multiple sclerosis (MS), but integrated health practitioners may recommend CBD oil to help relieve some of these symptoms by acting on cannabinoid receptors in your body. But, first, let’s learn a bit more about MS.

What Is Multiple Sclerosis?

MS can be debilitating, but modern drug treatments and pain relief from CBD provide hope.

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disorder. When the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells in your body, it can lead to inflammation and pain. In the case of MS, this attack damages myelin- a protective sheath that surrounds nerve fibers for protection. This damage slows or blocks electrical signals sent by those nerves to other parts of your body (such as muscles).

Symptoms Of MS And How It Affects The Body

Multiple sclerosis can cause a variety of symptoms depending on where the myelin is attacked. Symptoms may include numbness and tingling in extremities, muscle weakness, problems with coordination and balance, pain, bladder dysfunction (because nerves that control those functions are also affected), fatigue, as well as cognitive difficulties such as difficulty completing tasks or remembering things.

Current Treatments For MS

Current medical treatments for MS include steroids, which suppress the immune system and help reduce inflammation. Another treatment option is disease-modifying drugs that aim to slow down or stop MS from progressing further by reducing nerve damage in the brain and spinal cord.

How CBD Might Provide Relief From Symptoms Of MS

There is no known cure for MS, but integrated health practitioners may recommend CBD oil to help relieve some of these symptoms by acting on cannabinoid receptors in your body. CBD oil contains cannabidiol (CBD), a phytocannabinoid shown for various therapeutic effects, including pain relief, anxiety reduction, stress alleviation, nausea suppression, and more.

You can also integrate CBD into conventional treatments like medications and topical creams, so it’s not just an alternative form of medicine but an addition too! We recommend speaking with a doctor to confirm there will be no drug interactions. It doesn’t have any psychoactive effects like THC does – so you won’t get high from taking it! Essentially, when you take CBD oil, your body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) reacts by using its CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB2 receptors are abundant throughout your body and may help reduce feelings of pain and inflammation.
