Traveling With CBD

Traveling In CBD Style

As the U.S. begins to return to a normal state of affairs with the introduction of the coronavirus vaccine, many of us who have had pent up feelings of wanting to travel can finally begin to make plans. Some of us may be considering traveling to another state, while others may want to go outside the states to someplace far away and exotic.

Wherever you plan on going, you may feel like bringing your CBD with you for stress, sleep, or muscle and joint pain relief. However, it’s important to know that while CBD is legal at the federal level due to the introduction of the 2018 Farm Bill, there are some restrictions you still need to keep in mind. We’ll explain all you need to know below.

Cannabis, Hemp, or CBD?

For someone who may be just getting into CBD, it can be quite confusing. There are many different terms to keep track of and they are all important when it comes to not only legality, but finding the potential health benefits that are best for you and your situation. Let’s talk about cannabis, hemp, and CBD.

Cannabis

Cannabis is the name of the plant that has also been referred to as marijuana. It contains both CBD and THC and has been used for thousands of years for its medicinal effects as well as recreational use.

Hemp

This plant is related to and very similar to cannabis, but it contains no THC. It has large amounts of CBD. Hemp can also be found in some industrial products like hemp rope. Additionally, some people have begun using it in supplements in recent years. Hemp seeds and hemp seed hearts are available as health foods in many natural grocery stores.

CBD

CBD, or formally known as Cannabidiol, is a terpene found in hemp and cannabis plants. Its use has increased tremendously in recent years, as research has begun to suggest it may be helpful for a variety of conditions. These conditions include chronic stress, insomnia, and various body pains.

Domestic Travel

Traveling domestically with CBD is safe and poses no potential problems. After the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp and CBD are legal in all states. Does this mean you can fly with CBD? Yes! You can take your CBD with you on your flight, but there is one thing you need to be aware of. If it is in liquid form, such as CBD oil, you’ll need to be very careful about how much you bring with you as a carry-on. Our advice is to keep it in your checked bags to avoid having it confiscated by the liquid restrictions from TSA. Creams and Salves may cause issues with this requirement too. When in doubt, keep it in your checked luggage.

Taking A Roadtrip With CBD

If you aren’t quite feeling adventurous enough yet to fly, road trips are a great way to see the states while in the privacy of your vehicle. It’s also a great way to avoid the carry-on restrictions of liquid CBD. Again, because of the 2018 Farm Bill, there is no issue with traveling across state lines with CBD as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC. While full-spectrum CBD can contain trace amounts of THC, broad-spectrum CBD products do not contain any THC.

Flying Internationally With CBD

When looking to visit other countries, we strongly suggest that you treat the situation with extreme care. While you may be able to find information online about whether or not the country you are traveling to allows CBD, you also may be putting yourself at unnecessary legal risk. With connecting flights through other countries, translation errors in CBD documentation, and the possibility of misunderstandings, it may be a good idea to refrain from bringing your CBD abroad. Some countries have very unforgiving laws regarding hemp, cannabis, and CBD and may even treat it as a hard, illicit drug.
